Depending on the particular class and the individual professor, using the correct “style” for a university paper can be challenging. Within the discipline of Biblical and religious studies, three of the most common academic styles are (in order of my preference):
- Chicago Manual of Style (Turabian’s manual is great!)
- Modern Language Association (an online guide from Purdue University)
- American Psychological Association (another guide from Purdue)
Of course, the best solution by far is to buy Endnote X1 Student Edition and let your word processor take care of everything for you. I used Endnote for my doctoral dissertation, and I estimate that it saved me at least one hundred hours of writing, formatting, correcting, searching of online library databases etc. It is one of the best academic programs that you can buy!
