Mark 7 – What do You Need to Let Go of?

Chapter 7 of my #DailyMark journey.  I’m struck by both the clarity and offensiveness of Jesus’ words in verse 8, “You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men”.  Ouch!

I’ve written about tradition earlier this year, and in general, I think Jesus was making the same point in this situation.  If biblical truths and principles are in conflict with “the way we’ve always done things “, then the Bible wins every time.  Or at least it should win.

One of the challenges, of course, is that sometimes the Bible isn’t quite as neat and tidy as we would like it to be.  Everything does not fit perfectly into a little box.  Some examples could be the timing of baptism, the role of gender in leadership, the details of the end of time (click here and here), etc.

Regardless, however, our goal should be to default to the Bible as best we can, even when it means breaking from tradition.

What are the traditions that you’ve experienced, that you think might be getting in the way of the work of God?

What practices or habits in your own life do you need to let go of?
